The Government of Saskatchewan says it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Alberta government to advance nuclear power generation.
In a news release Crown Investments Corporation Minister Dustin Duncan said that the two provinces share similar challenges and opportunities related to decarbonization.
In 2019, Saskatchewan, Ontario and New Brunswick signed an MOU to advance Small Modular Reactors in Canada, with Alberta formally joining the MOU in 2021. The government says the new, bilateral MOU between Saskatchewan and Alberta has additional areas of interest such as industrial decarbonization and grid reliability.
Alberta’s Affordability and Utilities Minister Nathan Neudorf says his province looks forward to learning from Saskatchewan’s experience with nuclear generation.
A final decision on whether to build a SMR in Saskatchewan won’t happen until 2029 after a number of regulatory measures and assessments are made. This includes site evaluations and public consultation, with the first SMR in this province possibly by 2032.
