One in three Canadian kids aren’t able to participate in organized sport because of the cost, and that’s where KidSport comes in.
The national charity is spreading awareness this month during KidSport month, while also hoping to encourage donations.
Local spokesperson, Daphne Van Den Hurk, explains that KidSport is a children’s charity which helps families facing financial difficulties to get their children into sports.
Families apply and if they qualify, KidSport will pay the registration fees and equipment costs.
The Saskatoon chapter administers grants up to $500 per child per year for kids who live in Saskatoon.
There are 41 chapters across the province.
Van Den Hurk notes that sports help with both physical and mental health.
She says, “They are part of a team. They are becoming leaders on their team. It’s kind of a great outlet, so if they have had a rough day or something, they go to sports and it usually cheers them up after they have participated with their teammates.”
Of the over 50 sports, Van Den Hurk lists hockey, soccer, gymnastics, basketball, football and karate as the most popular ones.
Van Den Hurk encouraging businesses and organizations to take part in National Jersey Day for KidSport on May 31st, where employees donate for the opportunity to wear their favourite team’s colours.
