The University of Saskatchewan’s crop research projects are receiving more than $8-million of support from the federal and provincial governments and industry partners. USask Vice-President of Research, Karen Chad, says this major commitment will address critically important crop challenges. Some of the research includes improving disease resistance in crop, for instance improving resistance to root rot in peas, chickpeas and lentils, and to blossom blight in coriander and caraway. Researchers are also developing early-sowing, fast-germinating seeds for canola and soybeans to extend the growing season, improving wheat breeding and production and using pulse proteins to replace animal products in the beverage industry.
