Nature Saskatchewan is doing a count for two threatened species: the monarch butterfly or the loggerhead shrike bird. Habitat Stewardship Coordinator Emily Putz says they work directly with landholders and land managers to conserve and monitor for these species. She says they want to get as many eyes and ears as possible to collect data.
Putz says monarchs on the prairies have recently been upgraded from ‘special concern’ to ‘endangered’ which is the highest at risk category. She says there is quite a knowledge gap because they don’t know as much about what monarch butterflies do here as compared to what they know about monarch butterflies in eastern Canaa. There are also about 40,000 loggerhead shrikes in the province. The predatory songbird is listed as ‘threatened’. (Discover Moose Jaw)
