Manitoba RCMP have issued a news release with a roundup of the events where there was a police-involved shooting and suspects nabbed in Saskatchewan.
Last Sunday, Manitoba officers received notification from Saskatchewan RCMP about a vehicle stolen from Cypress River in May which had been seen near Carlyle and was thought to be headed to Manitoba. Police believed there could be a firearm in the vehicle. It was spotted in Manitoba and around 1:20 Wednesday morning and RCMP responded to help the Winnipeg Police Service because the vehicle had been located south of the city.
Details around the officer-involved shooting are not being released because it is now under an independent investigation, but it was previously reported that there was a pursuit and then a police cruiser was rammed by the stolen vehicle, which resulted in officers discharging their firearms. The suspects fled and when it was later located, a 30-year-old man was found dead and a 34-year-old woman was released without charges.
Two others, a man and woman fled in another stolen vehicle which was later stopped near Yorkton. Twenty-nine-year-old David Frank Burling was arrested and the 37-year-old woman was released. He is charged with two counts of assault against a peace officer, and one count each of possessing property obtained by crime over $5,000, failing to stop, and dangerous driving.
Superintendent Rob Lasson, Acting Criminal Operations Officer for the Manitoba RCMP says, “There is much more work to do on this investigation.” He states that it was a multi-agency, multi-jurisdictional event that was complex and had many moving parts.
