Medicine Hat’s first lead Thursday night was the last lead of the game as the Mavericks downed the Saskatoon Berries 6-4 before 1,308 fans at Cairns Field.
The Berries held leads of 1-0, 3-1 and 4-2, only to have Medicine Hat respond and eventually win with two runs in the top of the ninth inning off another new Saskatoon pitcher in Tyler Davis. After E-J Miramontes started Wednesday’s 14-8 Berries’ victory over the Mavericks, Saskatoon head coach Joe Carnahan used the other three newcomers to his pitching staff in relief on Thursday. Unfortunately, Saskatoon product Adam Beamin, Jacob Hadden and Davis combined to allow four runs on seven hits over the final three frames as Medicine Hat improved their record to 9-5 while the Berries had their three-game winning streak come to an end – their record now 6-9. Saskatoon is on the road the next two nights, visiting Swift Current Friday and Weyburn Saturday before hosting the Beavers Sunday at 1 o’clock.
