On her 13th birthday, Torrie Schaffer from Balcarres was named the 2020 Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital Champion Child.
Schaffer was diagnosed with a blood disease four years ago that causes her to bruise easily, and could also lead to internal bleeding.
The only way to treat it is regular blood work and the use of a machine purchased by the Children’s Hospital Foundation six months before her diagnosis.
Torrie’s mom Darci Skjerven says her daughter has persevered through so much.
Schaffer takes over for 13 year-old Blake Wheeler from Saskatoon, who had spent 110 days in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
