Cameco, Westinghouse Electric Company and Sask Power have signed a memorandum of understanding to evaluate the potential of Westinghouse’s nuclear reactor technology and the nuclear fuel that could be required for Saskatchewan’s clean power needs in the future.
A news release from the three entities says the MOU will explore technical and commercial pathways to deploy Westinghouse’s reactor technology. SaskPower is expected to make its final decision in 2029 about whether or not to proceed with constructing the province’s first SMR facility, which would use uranium from Cameco.
President and CEO of Cameco, Tim Gitzel, says, “We look forward to assessing the potential role Cameco and Westinghouse could play in decarbonizing Saskatchewan’s power grid, an ambitious and important goal for the province’s future.”
