In celebration of its 100th anniversary, the Mennonite Central Committee is attempting to collect a record-breaking 6,500 comforters in one-day across Canada and around the world.
Today (sat), here in Saskatchewan, three locations will be set up where volunteers and staff will be sewing comforters that will be shipped to people that have been affected by war or disaster in countries overseas.
Today (sat) from 1 to 5 p.m., the Great Winter Warm-Up event will be happening at both the Rosthern Junior College in Rosthern and at the West Portal Church in Saskatoon. There will also be a location in Swift Current.
Jana Al-Sagheer, a spokesperson for MCC in Saskatchewan says volunteers will be able to come and go throughout the afternoon. Al-Sagheer says today (sat) marks the first annual Great Winter Warm-Up.
She adds they wanted to go back to their roots for their centennial kick-off event.
“We started MCC by helping families who were affected by war and famine in southern Russia which is now present day Ukraine. So we started by giving people comforters way back when and we though we would throw it back to our roots.”
Not only are people in Canada taking part in the event, Al-Sagheer says those in the U.S. and Europe are also taking part.
