There are a few more details being released about an officer involved shooting in Saskatoon last Thursday. A news release from Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team says around 10:30 last Thursday morning, Saskatoon Police were told a man had produced a shotgun and fired a single round in front of the person who called police, near the intersection of 20th Street West and Avenue U South. The caller gave a description of the man and the group he was with and remained on the line with police, providing updates as to where the group was.
It was about a minute after the caller hung up that two officers with the Saskatoon Police Tactical Support Unit encountered a group resembling the caller’s description near the intersection of 20th Street West and Avenue S South. Shortly after that, there was a confrontation between two police officers and a 27-year-old man and the two officers fired their guns. EMS was called and the man was pronounced dead a short time later.
SIRT’s investigation will examine the actions of police, including the circumstances surrounding the man’s death. The investigation into the original incident will be investigated by the Saskatoon Police Service. A report will be issued to the public within 90 days of the investigation ending.
