A news release from the Government of Saskatchewan says the province’s upstream oil and gas sector continues to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, achieving a 76 per cent reduction last year compared, compared to 2015. The numbers come from the annual Oil and Gas Emissions Management Regulations report, which states that the 3.6 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent last year is also six per cent less than 2022.
The upstream oil and gas sector is companies that identify, extract, or produce materials. It includes geologists, geophysicists, service rig operators, engineering firms, scientists, and seismic and drilling contractors. Downstream includes operations that begin after the production phase and continue to the point of sale. This would include oil refineries, petrochemical plants, natural gas distributors and retail outlets.
