Provincial Park Upgrades
Several of Saskatchewan’s provincial parks have received upgrades this year through funding set aside in the 2024-25 provincial budget.
The Meadow Lake Provincial Park saw the opening of a new campground loop at Waterhen Lake Campground, and a new service centre was established at Stabler Point Campground at Makwa Lake Provincial Parks.
The campground loop features 42 electrified campsites, a four bay-service centre, added flush washroom facilities, and water treatment system.
Other water related projects include wastewater system improvements at The Battlefords Provincial Park, as well as lagoon upgrade at Danielson Provincial Park.
Potable water system upgrades were made at Candle Lake and Saskatchewan Landing Provincial Park.
Rosthern Water Treatment Plant Upgrade
Rosthern is gaining a new water supply and treatment plant thanks to a funding announcement from the provincial and federal governments.
The project will include a backup generator and water reservoir storage, which aim to support current drinking water needs while also accommodating future growth.
The town will also see a new communications system as part of the project, as well as upgrades to two well control buildings, and the demolition of the old water treatment facility.
In a news release, Mayor of Rosthern Dennis Helmuth says “This exciting improvement to our fresh-water infrastructure is crucial for our community’s future…We are delighted to have been selected for this project and look forward to project development and completion along with our Provincial and Federal partners.
Water Infrastructure Upgrades
To ensure water structures continue to serve the diverse needs of west central Saskatchewan, the Water Security Agency is commencing on three major capital projects worth $20 million.
The first project, located at Gardiner Dam, will see the installation of safety booms across the spillway inlet channel and in front of the East Side Pump Station, repairs to the concrete spillway at the Tunnel Control Structure #5, and additional measures to better regulate the energy created from water releases.
The second project, affecting the East Side Pump Station, will upgrade the substation from 72,000 volts to 138,000 volts to meet current demands. An electrical house that will contain integral electrical infrastructure in a climate-controlled environment will be added to extend the life span of the equipment.
And at the Broderick Reservoir, the control gates in both outlet structures were replaced, and many safety upgrades were made to ensure the operations staff and local stakeholders can safely divert water.
WSA will also begin shoreline armouring structure rehabilitation on the north and west embankments this summer.
