Unifor is illegally blockading the Co-op Refinery in Regina and not allowing people or truck movement in or out of the refinery. That from Federated Co-op after a move to escalate the labour dispute by the Unifor National union.
FCL feels it is a violation of the injunction barring Unifor from blocking the refinery however, National President Jerry Dias says a court order limiting the picket line’s ability to impede traffic only applies to Unifor Local 594 and not the national union.
FCL also describes a new video released by Unifor as disturbing and disgusting alleging that the union used a telephoto lense in its “Name the Scabs” video to spy on workers. The company says it is an invasion of privacy.
Regina Police have tweeted out advising motorists to avoid streets in and around the Co-op Refinery. The RPS says drivers are asked to avoid 9th Avenue North, McDonald Street and Fleet Street. Backups are also affecting the area of Highway 46 entering Regina.
Regina Police say their role is to keep the peace and to ensure everyone’s rights are upheld. The tweet adds that Unifor members have a right to picket and that Co-op has a right to do business.
The tweet also reads that in an emotionally charged environment, there will be disagreements and the the police service says they will continue to communicate closely with both parties during the dispute.
Regina Police say avoiding escalation and working out disagreements peacefully is the responsibility of both parties involved and that the involvement of police should be a last resort.
