The Saskatoon Fire Department responded to a downtown apartment fire just after 6 p.m. Wednesday. The fire was in the 300 block of 2nd Avenue South which is where the Lighthouse is located.
The Fire Department says in a news release that crews found a room with a light haze and when the ceiling space was opened, a fire that had been burning in a joist space was discovered. It was extinguished by opening the ceiling and the floor from the suite above to access the fire. The Fire Investigator says the accidental blaze was caused by an electrical malfunction which originated in the concealed joist space between the ceiling and the floor above. Four suites were damaged, and the damage estimate is $150,000.
Thirty-eight people were displaced, and the properties agent has confirmed they were able to find suitable accommodations for them. There were no injuries reported from this fire.
