The Saskatchewan Chamber of Commerce feels the entire province will benefit from greater Indigenous involvement in the economy.
C-E-O Steve McLellan says after exploring the idea for about 30 years the chamber has launched its Indigenous Engagement Charter.
He’s encouraged by a survey that indicates about 90-percent of businesses in Saskatchewan are on board with welcoming more Indigenous participation in their organizations.
The chamber’s Director of Indigenous Engagement says those who sign the charter are able to customize a plan that works for their companies.
Nick Crighton says it could be any combination of education, retention, hiring or purchases from Indigenous suppliers.
He says at 16-percent Indigenous people comprise the youngest and fastest growing population in Saskatchewan so the possible economic benefits are considerable.
About 20 Saskatoon and area businesses officially signed the charter this morning during a ceremony at Prairieland Park.
