SaskPower has established a nuclear subsidiary to advance the province’s Small Modular Reactor project through the regulatory and licensing process, although whether to proceed with SMRs is still a few years away. The subsidiary is called SaskNuclear.
Minister Responsible for SaskPower, Dustin Duncan, says, “The work done at SaskNuclear in the coming years will help support a final investment decision on whether to proceed with SMRs in 2029.” The subsidiary is wholly owned by SaskPower and shares a President and CEO as well as a Board of Directors. A news release from SaskPower says SaskNuclear was created through an Order in Council, which is a directive issued by the Lieutenant Governor on the advice of Cabinet.
