The Prince Albert Police Service is warning the public of a type of scam call called a ‘false emergency’, as several of the calls have been reported recently in the city.
Police say during the phone interaction, the caller claims to be a family member in an emergency. They will request a large sum of money and provide the victim, often an older adult, with a password.
The scammer then arranges for someone to pick up the money as well as the password.
Police say if you receive a call like this, always ask the caller importance questions that the family member they’re pretending to be would know the answers to. You can also hang up on them and call the family member in question directly.
If you’ve been a victim of this type of fraud, you’re asked report the incident online to the PA Police Service.
