The 2024-25 edition of the Saskatoon Blades will have to settle for the second-longest winning streak to start a season in franchise history after falling by a 6-3 score to the Broncos in Swift Current Friday night.
The home team out-scored the Bridge City Bunch 4-1 in the third period, leaving the Blades with a 4-1-0 record. Only the Blue and Gold of 1975-76 have a l0nger winning run to open a campaign at six-in-a-row. On Friday, Saskatoon didn’t have a fourth comeback in them as they never led in the game against 2-3-0 Swift Current, trailing by 1-0, 2-1 and 3-2 scores and forging ties all three times before Speedy Creek pulled away. The Bridge City Bunch had a tough time containing Rylan Gould as the 19-year-old Broncos’ centre scored twice, once short-handed and once on the power play, and added three assists – two of the helpers on goals by Ty Coupland, who ended up with a hat-trick. Cooper Williams, Willie James and Rowan Calvert replied for the Blue and Gold, who out-shot Swift Current 32-31. In addition to being the last of the unbeaten teams in the W-H-L, the Blades had an eight-game, head-to-head winning streak against the Broncos come to an end. Saskatoon will try to put the brakes to a similar streak on Saturday when they host Everett at 7 o’clock at SaskTel Centre. The Silvertips have won the last 10 meetings with the Blades, dating back to 2011. CJWW’s broadcast Saturday begins at 6:45 p.m. Following are the audio highlights from CJWW’s broadcast, Les Lazaruk’s Post-Game Show interview with head coach Dan Da Silva and the official game summary courtesy the W-H-L website…..
