The Saskatoon Police Service has been able to cuts its operational costs in the 2020 budget because of the energy efficiency of the new police headquarters.
Deputy Chief of Support Services, Mitch Yuzdepski, says this year’s operating budget has been reduced by $170-thousand because of green savings.
For instance, the building uses 35 per cent less water than other buildings its size, meaning a savings of 5-million litres of water each year.
The open concept design with lots of windows means natural light, reducing the need for electric light and heated underground parking for patrol vehicles means the vehicles don’t have to be kept running in the winter to keep the specialized equipment inside functioning.
The Saskatoon Police Service says the headquarters’ energy performance is 53 per cent better than a standard building of its size, which contributes to an overall reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and to operational cost savings.
