The World Health Organization says proper infant nutrition is fundamental to a child’s continued health, from birth through adulthood, lowering the risk of chronic disease and promoting regular mental and physical development. The Saskatoon Food Bank & Learning Centre understands that, and that’s why the second annual Infant Formula fundraising campaign is happening all through October.
Director of Operations and Engagement at the Food Bank, Deborah Hamp says child nutrition is so important. “You know as kids are growing and learning, they need that nutrition to be able to thrive. Infant formula is extremely expensive. It’s cost prohibitive and it’s such a huge relief to families to have that additional nutrition support.” Canpotex has promised to match every donation up to $50,000, so the goal is to raise $50,000 for a total of $100,000.
With the end of October drawing near, Hamp says they haven’t reached that goal yet. Every dollar from this campaign goes toward purchasing the much-needed infant formula. Executive Director Laurie O’Connor says the campaign is a lifeline for many families, especially as the demand continues to rise.
