One of the 23 trustee candidates for Saskatoon Catholic Schools is calling for changes to the current election system. Owen Fortosky suggests it is difficult to make an informed decision with so many candidates in the at-large system. He says to reach all of the Catholic voters, even with a team of volunteers, the cost to communicate with citizens city-wide would be on par with those running for mayor. also Fortosky believes the current system also favours incumbents because of their name recognition. He points out that the Separate School System has already partitioned the rural areas into three wards, so he questions why it can’t happen in the city as well. He says, “Cross-city representation is a must if trustees are truly looking for diverse and varied input.”
