CUPE 2669 has notified Saskatoon Public Library (SPL) of strike action with a work stoppage Tuesday. Library employees will return to work Wednesday. The work stoppage means libraries in Saskatoon are closed tomorrow.
The Saskatoon Public Library says before the work stoppage on November 12th, it made an offer to the union which the SPL says included all previous proposals and offered the over 75 Circulation Associates additional paid sick time. The Saskatoon Public Library also says it included a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) that addresses staffing at the Frances Morrison Central Library, directly responding to the safety and security concerns raised by the Union, however, SPL notes that CUPE 2669 has yet to send a response to that offer before once again issuing a strike notice.
In a news release, Carol Shepstone, Director of Libraries & CEO of SPL says, “We are disappointed that CUPE 2669 has not sent a response to our latest offer and has instead chosen to take job action that will lead to the closure of libraries, despite having an open offer on the table. We are committed to the bargaining process and look forward to our next mediation date scheduled for Wednesday, November 27.”
