Today (Tues) is the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. The theme this year is amplifying the leadership of persons with disabilities for an inclusive and sustainable future. The World Health Organization explains that persons with disabilities make up 16 per cent of the global population, but they rarely are able to have leadership roles in the health sector because of the barriers they face like discrimination, stigma, or exclusion from education and employment opportunities.
SaskAbilities joins the WHO in recognizing the day and says in a news release that for nearly 75 years, the organization has remained committed to breaking down barriers and creating opportunities through programs and services that serve over 60,000 people every year.
The organization invites everyone to work together to make the world a more inclusive, accessible, and sustainable place for everyone.
