The Saskatoon Blades started well, but couldn’t quite nurse a lead into the win column Wednesday as the Portland Winterhawks rallied for a 4-3 shootout triumph at SaskTel Centre.
Despite surrendering the opening goal only 43 seconds into the contest to the Hawks, the Bridge City Bunch scored the next three goals before the five-minute mark of the second period and appeared to be on their way to their 23rd win of the season and ending a four-game, head-to-head winless streak against Portland. However, the Winterhawks gradually took over the contest in front of 3,797 fans and, finally, solved Blue and Gold goaltender Evan Gardner for two goals in the final five minutes of regulation time to force overtime. Both teams had great scoring chances in the five-minute, three-on-three session before the Hawks out-scored the Blades 2-0 in the penalty shot competition. That gave Portland three wins in four games on their East Division road trip. Saskatoon is now winless in three games and their overall record is at 22-14-5 for 49 points, still good for first place in the East and four points clear of Prince Albert and Brandon. Cooper Williams, Hayden Harsanyi and Rowan Calvert tallied for the Bridge City Bunch while Grayden Siepmann added two assists. Gardner stopped 42 shots as the Winterhawks out-shot the Blue and Gold 45-25. The Blades return to action Friday when they host the Red Deer Rebels at 7 o’clock at SaskTel Centre with CJWW’s broadcast beginning at 6:45.
