Considering the build-up and situation, Friday night’s Saskatoon Blades at Brandon Wheat Kings game was everything you could expect, want and more – with the Bridge City Bunch coming through with a 3-2 overtime triumph.

Sixteen-year-old rookie Cooper Williams (pictured) recorded his first W-H-L game-winning goal, scoring on a breakaway with 17 seconds left in the five minute, three-on-three O-T. It was the only time during the contest that the Blue and Gold led. The result pulled the Blades into a tie for first place in the East Division with Prince Albert, who were trimmed 6-1 Friday in Lethbridge, one point ahead of the Wheaties. Both goaltenders, Ethan McCallum for Saskatoon and Carson Bjarnason for Brandon, were stellar to spectacular, taking turns with shining stops as each made 39 saves as the Bridge City Bunch out-shot the Wheat Kings 42-41. For McCallum, the win was especially sweet in front of about 40 friends and family in his home-town. Willy James and Hudson Kibblewhite notched the other goals for the 26-16-6 Blue and Gold. Williams added an assist to his goal while German import winger David Lewandowski chipped in a pair of helpers. But, there’s no rest and no time to celebrate for the Blades as they are back in action Saturday at SaskTel Centre against the Regina Pats. Game time is 7 o’clock with CJWW’s broadcast at 6:45.
