Regina Police are warning the public of a recent scam, where post-secondary students are being robbed of their tuition money.
Students report that the scammer calls with promises of discounted tuition in exchange for an upfront payment. The scammer then receives the tuition money, and ‘pays’ the educational institution using fraudulent credit cards.
The students are then under the impression their tuition has been paid in full, until they receive a notice that there was a problem with the payment.
This type of scam has affected 23 victims so far, and the financial loss exceeds $125,000.
The public is reminded to be wary of offers such as this, and if you have been victimized, be cautious of ‘recovery’ schemes. A scammer connected to the first scammer may promise to be able to recover your lost funds for a fee.
