Blades Ride Solid Team Effort For All But a Few Minutes to Quell Hurricanes at Home

For the second time in five days, the Saskatoon Blades showed they aren’t intimidated by one of the “all-in” teams from the Central Division, defeating the Hurricanes 4-3 Wednesday night in Lethbridge.

After doubling the Calgary Hitmen 6-3 on Valentine’s Day at SaskTel Centre, Hunter Laing (pictured) scored twice in the first 5:20 on the Bridge City Bunch’s first two shots on Canes’ goaltender Jackson Unger and followed with a solid 55-minute team effort in frustrating a very good Lethbridge team in front of 3,343 fans. The Hurricanes had a late comeback from a 4-1 deficit fall one goal short as the Blue and Gold improved to 29-18-7 for 65 points, one back of Prince Albert and two behind East Division-leading Brandon. Laing’s second goal was of the highlight reel variety, deking Unger to the ice and stepping around the goaltender for a tuck-in marker. Kazden Mathies and Hayden Harsanyi also tallied for the Blades as all four goals were scored by players acquired between New Year’s Day and the W-H-L’s January 9th trade deadline. Captain Ben Saunderson chipped in two assists as Saskatoon was out-shot 32-24 by the now 34-19-3 Canes. The Bridge City Bunch have Thursday off before taking on the Rebels in Red Deer on Friday. The Blue and Gold have a Magic Number of 10 points over Red Deer to clinch a playoff spot.
