Moose Jaw Police Service (MJPS) has released a photo of a suspect who was charged with fraud in cases involving residents both in Moose Jaw and in Saskatoon.
Moose Jaw Police say they have received approximately 30 calls for service from area residents indicating they were contacted as part of an attempted “grandparent scam”. Several residents had provided cash to a female suspect, who was posing as a bail bondsperson, collecting money.
Forty-four-year-old Veronique Charpentier of Montreal, Quebec is facing multiple charges of Fraud over $5000. With the assistance of Regina Police Service, MJPS executed a search warrant on Thursday, seizing proceeds of crime relating to these allegations.
The Saskatoon Police Service says between March 17th and 20th three Saskatoon residents were victims of the Emergency/Grandparent scam. In all three cases a woman went to the victim’s homes and collected money. The scam involves fraudsters contacting victims with a false story about a family member in trouble and will take cash to make the problem go away or get the family member out of danger.
Charpentier was remanded in custody after a court appearance Friday and Moose Jaw Police are asking citizens to check out her photo in that there are other frauds committed that have not yet been reported to police.
