Paper Wheat is the most successful stage show in Saskatchewan history, which opened on May 18, 1977. Extremely successful, it played to full houses across the province and nation and now, for the first time, it is showing in Meacham, Saskatchewan, at Dancing Sky Theatre.
The play is produced by the 25th Street Theatre Centre and is about the hard lives of early Saskatchewan settlers and the foundation of the wheat pools and the Co-op movement on the Canadian Prairies.
Paper Wheat is considered ‘documentary theatre’, with company members traveling to local communities to collect stories about Saskatchewan history.
Though a serious topic, actress Lauren Griffin describes how the actors engage audiences with an interesting style and delivery:
“It goes from very sincere moments to over-the-top comedy. There’s even a musical number in there.”
Dancing Sky Theatre’s production of Paper Wheat has many showtimes available now through to May 11th. Tickets can be purchased for just the show, or with brunch or dinner on select dates through their website: ontheboards.ca.
