Martensville’s Shercom Industries, a company that recycles rubber and turns it into new usable products has teamed up with Nike.
In July, Shercom signed a deal with the sports brand which will see the company convert rubber soles from old Nike shoes into usable products, including playground surfaces.
Mike Richards, director of rubber surfaces with Shercom says they first partnered with Playtop, a playground surfacing company out of the U.K. that is in direct partnership with Nike.
“What we do through our contract with Playtop is we have exclusive rights to what is called Nike Grind, Playtop with Nike Grind, um, it’s recycled running shoes incorporated in the rubber surface for playgrounds.”
The deal with Nike makes Shercom the exclusive installer of the Nike grind product in Canada. Richards adds they work on a lot playgrounds, patios and decks at Shercom.
After signing the contract in July, Shercom now offers their SHERPLAY surfaces through 26 locations across the country.
The Martensville company is currently working on connections with retailers in the United States.
