It may not be a romantic Valentine’s Day thought, but census data shows that single person households have become the most common living scenario in Canada for the first time in history.
National real estate firm Zoocasa says the number of people living alone has doubled from 1.7 million in 1981 to 4 million in 2016 and the number of singles owning their own homes has risen from 32 per cent in the 1980s to 50 per cent more recently.
Zoocasa adds that solo budgets go furthest in the Prairies.
Edmonton takes the top spot as most affordable for single income buyers.
The real estate company takes into consideration home price, down payment needed, and the average income for the area.
In that scenario, Saskatoon is the second most affordable and Regina is third.
