The march towards their goals continued Tuesday night for the Saskatoon Berries as they downed the Weyburn Beavers 7-3.
Saskatoon scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning, then recent pitching newcomer Calvin Junek (pictured) and three relievers combined to make the lead stand up. It was the 42nd win of the season for the Berries, reducing their Magic Number to clinch first place overall in the Western Canadian Baseball League to one – as in one win or one loss by the Okotoks Dawgs will mean Saskatoon will have home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. With seven games remaining on their schedule, the Berries are closing in on the W-C-B-L record for most wins in a 56-game regular season – 44 by the Sylvan Lake Gulls last year. In addition, by winning at least six of their last seven games, Saskatoon would put together the best record in league history by winning percentage. On Tuesday, before 2,004 fans at Cairns Field, the Berries were sparked offensively by all-star centre-fielder Carter Beck, who had three hits and scored twice – including a single stolen base and run scored in the big Saskatoon first inning. Third baseman Mason Roell and first baseman Cory Wouters chipped in with two R-B-I each while left-fielder Evan Janner also scored two runs. After losing the first game of the season, 9-0 in Weyburn back on May 29, Saskatoon has won the last eight head-to-head meetings. The same teams – the 42-7 Berries and the 13-37 Beavers – meet Wednesday night at 7 o’clock at Cairns Field. Following are post-game media scrums with Saskatoon assistant coach Chance Wheatley, Junek, Beck and Roell plus the official box score courtesy the W-C-B-L website…..
