Canada’s premiers are calling for a teleconference call today with the Prime Minister to discuss paths to a peaceful resolution and end to the rail blockades in the country.
Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe is Chair of the Council of the Federation and organized a conference call with Canada’s Premiers yesterday. He says they discussed the impacts the illegal blockades are having on their economies.
VIA has stopped most of its trains due to the ongoing rail blockades across Canada and announced yesterday that it would have to lay off as many as a thousand people. CN Rail has also scaled back eastern operations in light of the protest blockades.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says he spoke with the Saskatchewan Premier yesterdeay and says they discussed ending the blockades quickly and peacefully while maintaining dialogue to address underlying issues in the spirit of reconciliation.
Some Wet’suwet’en hereditary chiefs in BC are against the Coastal GasLink natural gas pipeline which is slated to run through their territory. They started the rail blockades in the country as a protest against the pipeline.
Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer, earlier this week, stated that every single, elected, band council on the Coastal GasLink route support the project.
