Prime Minister Justin Trudeau spoke with all of Canada’s premiers in a call with the Council of the Federation last night. The Prime Minister’s office says they discussed the disruptions to infrastructure across the country caused by rail blockades and the impact it is having on Canadian farmers, business, families and workers.
VIA Rail announced up to a thousand layoffs earlier this week because of rail blockades, CN Rail has scaled back eastern operations and in terms of farming and getting grain to market, there are 40 ships waiting at Vancouver and another 10 at the Port of Prince Rupert.
The PMO says they discussed the importance of ending the blockades as quickly as possible while reaching a peaceful and lasting resolution in a way that builds trust and respect among all those involved.
Some Wet’suwet’en hereditary chiefs in BC are against the Coastal GasLink natural gas pipeline which is slated to run through their territory. They started the rail blockades in the country as a protest against the pipeline.
